About the Design Contest
The SCRAPLAB DESIGN CONTEST seeks to find innovative and sustainable designs made of scrap. The objective is to recycle waste materials in the form of new products such as furniture, accessories or artwork and to bring them back into the economic circle. It addresses professional designers, design students and amateur designers as well as everyone else from all around the world who is interested in how waste materials can be recycled. Besides, participants can also actively take part by voting for the best designs of other members or commenting on submissions and leaving messages.

Submission of a Design
First of all, you can both submit a handmade prototype or a graphically draft. It is only important that you give your design a title, that you upload a picture whether a photo, a computer generated design or a freehand drawing and that you describe it a little bit. You may also chose one of nine categories for your design: furniture, accessoires, jewellery, bags, fashion, garden, art, children or various.

The entry of a scrap design is supported by an easy-to-use toolkit. The toolkit guides you through the entry process. The following steps have to be completed to enter a design:

1. Get informed about the topic of the contest and find inspiration for your design.
2. Choose one category for your entry.
3. Upload your design and describe it
    a. Upload your design (JPG, GIF or PNG, max. 5 MB, min. 500 by 500 px)
    b. Enter a title for your design
    c. Describe all functional aspects of your design
    d. Describe the main benefits of your design (Why is your design special?)
4. Add further attachments (optional)
    - Upload additional images (JPG, .GIF, .PNG, .IGS, STP, .3DS, VRML; max. 5 MB)
    - Upload documents (DOC, PDF, XLS, PPT, TXT, CSV)
5. Add tags to the used material (optional)
6. Submit your design
7. After submitting share your design with your friends or post it on your Facebook profile (optional)

Material Cloud
To explore the designs, you can also filter them with the material cloud. It is a visual depiction of keywords, which lead you to a list of designs that are made of the selected materials. The cloud features all the materials you and other participants have attached to the designs. The larger the tag appears the more designs are attached to it.

Evaluation and Discussion
Beside the submission of designs the evaluation and discussion in the community are important for the contest.
The evaluation of designs by the jury is particularly based on the following criteria:
    > Overall impression
    > Creativity
    > Elaboration of design
    > Feasibility
    > Sustainability

To increase the depth of elaboration you can add comments at the bottom of each design or just leave a public message on a user’s profile.
As a participant of the contest, you may state whether you like or dislike the design of other contestants through an intuitive vote. You can indicate your evaluation of a design by assigning 1 to 5 points to the design. The average rating is displayed within the design pool and the design itself. Both, your evaluation or your comments, increase your activity counter and help the jury in finding the contest winners.
The jury will consider the evaluations of the community members when selecting the winners of the contest.

In order to participate in the contest, you have to register. As a registered user you can contribute your designs and become a candidate for the prizes and also read, evaluate and comment on other designs. To finalize your registration, you have to agree to the Terms and Conditions.

To register, you must take the following steps:

    3. Information about 1.prize preferences (optional)
    4. Information about the Innovation Community by the provider HYVE and application for further idea contests (optional)

Terms and Conditions
To be eligible to take part in the contest, you must become a registered user and agree with the terms and conditions of the contest. The whole contest phase is charged by HYVE AG and HYVE Innovation Community GmbH.

In a creative brainstorming Johann Füller - founder and CEO of HYVE and Florian Gypser - a Design Professor and co-founder of decided to establish a network that focuses on the innovative recirculation of industrial produced waste. In times of climate change, sustainability and environmental protection it becomes more and more important to handle the tons of scrap produced every day in an ecologically worthwhile way. The idea of the SCRAPLAB CONTEST and later on the SCRAPLAB COMMUNITY was born. Both aim to use the creative intelligence of inventors and designers from all over the world to create valuable products out of scrap. Thereby, the mission is to:
  • -    reduce waste disposal by reuse and upcycling
  • -    help to protect the environment
  • -    create awareness and understanding for the topic
  • -    educate about the value of "waste materials"

The SCRAPLAB DESIGN CONTEST is supposed to be the starting point for this initiative of social innovation. Designers worldwide are asked to submit a design whether prototype or draft, made of waste materials, to take part in an active and ecology- minded community and in doing so to win valuable prizes.

In a second step the SCRAPLAB COMMUNITY aims at linking three focus groups to realize this project on a larger scale: suppliers that want to get rid of their scrap, sponsors who are looking for innovative designs and all the designers that know how to reuse the scrap creatively. Conducting various contests sponsors can financially support the realization and/or series production of winning designs in follow up projects. Suppliers on the other hand provide the materials that designers may use for their designs.

The SCRAPLAB DESIGN CONTEST as well as the SCRAPLAB COMMUNITY are non-profit projects that aim at using the principles of crowdsourcing and co-creation in order to promote social innovation for a better world and the protection of the environment.

Scraplab just fits to the actual discussion about sustainability and the future development of our society. Not only the idea to build new products out of scrap is fascinating, but also the way how these innovations are collaboratively developed and co-created. The Scraplab initiative may significantly change our consciousness about and attitude towards scrap. In addition, it may have the potential to become a successful social enterprise itself.

Dr. Johann Fueller has been CEO of HYVE AG since November 2000 and is assistant professor at the Department of Strategic Management, Marketing and Tourism at the University of Innsbruck. Before joining HYVE AG, he worked for PriceWaterhouseCoopers in the field of strategic change. He did his doctorate in marketing on "Community based innovations – virtual integration of online consumer groups into new product development" with Prof. Hans Mühlbacher, University of Innsbruck and Prof. Eric von Hippel, MIT.

Florian Gypser
Design Professor and Co-founder of

The scraplab design contest truly inaugurates a new chapter towards a social discipline evolving around the term-cloud collaboration - industrial ecology - creativity - value creation. Through the powerful tools of collaborative creativity and social networking it is possible to move on into a visionary post-industrial era leveraging hidden opportunities found in economic and ecologic loopholes in the field of post-consumer waste and industrial solid waste. Today’s consumers are emerging as a group being able to question and to influence the process of how things are done by simply raising questions and by communication and exchanging their opinions and ideas online.

Florian Gypser is an architect and designer in the 3d generation receiving his master at the University of Applied Art in Vienna, Austria. In addition to his activities in the field of design and product development Florian Gypser is constantly screening markets and consumer behavior on the search for unseen opportunities and idle leverage points in order to enhance a common sustainable life style. He moved to Bangkok in 2004 and ever since worked in the field of architecture, product and furniture design. Through extensive factory trips as a Design Researcher he became in touch with the vast lavishness of physical resources occurring throughout various production processes leading to the idea and participation in initial activities of scraplab back in 2007. He is running a diverse design studio in the heart of Bangkok offering design consultancy and product development services to clients from the creative industry.

Singh Intrachooto
Design Professor, founder and head of Scrap Lab

Singh Intrachooto is Founder and Head of Scrap Lab as well as tenured professor at Kasetsart University Architecture, Bangkok, Thailand. He is Design Principal at OSISU, Thailand’s leading eco-design venture and holds Doctor of Philosophy degree in Design Technology from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His design evolves around sustainable design concept as his research focuses on identifying patterns of technological innovation in environmentally responsible architecture. Dr. Intrachooto’s investigations also include material developments from manufacturing and agricultural by-products as well as waste reclamation from buildings’ construction and debris. He is considered a pioneer of ecological design in Thailand. Dr. Intrachooto also teaches design at the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Washington and gives lectures in Denmark, Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and the United States while maintaining his design practice in Thailand with industrial products, art & design exhibitions, residential works, commercial facilities and urban redevelopments. He is Design Innovation Ambassador for Thailand’s National Innovation Agency.

Thomas Lackner

The contest provides an excellent opportunity to create new innovative design ideas for various products. It will help to trigger a better understanding on how we can reuse waste and combine it in completely different ways to create something new and valuable. Dr. Thomas Lackner is head of the Open Innovation Program at the Chief Technology Office of Siemens. He has spent more than 20 years within Siemens in various management positions such as Vice President Transport Telematics at the headquarter of Siemens One, as CEO and founder of the Siemens Technology Accelerator GmbH (STA) in Munich and head of several departments within Siemens Corporate Technology, Siemens Traffic Control Systems and Siemens Information and Communication Networks. Before joining Siemens he worked for Philips and the Ministry for Science and Research in Vienna, Austria. In 1982 he was awarded the Post Doctoral Fellowship of the Max Kade Foundation which enabled him to work as a postdoctoral fellow at M.I.T. in Cambridge, MA, USA.

Emanuel Maia
Designer, founder of the Portugal Design Lab and keen Innovation Community Member

This contest addresses a problem in society that is often neglected: the recycling of waste products. Therefore, the intention is to encourage the act of recycling and integrate Innovation and Design into the process in order to move on to the next level in the product cycle. To some the creations might be scrap but others will consider them as innovation.

Emanuel Maia is a Portuguese independent Product Designer, former teacher in Cinema 4D and founder of the Portugal Design Lab. In 2009 he has encountered the HYVE Innovation Community and participated in several design and innovation contests e.g. Bombardier YouRail, Melitta LatteA or Swirl Smellfighters. Due to his innovative design concepts as well as his enduring engagement throughout the whole contest time he has been rewarded with several prizes. One of his main missions was to support the hosting companies in innovating and adding value while searching for new ideas.

Dmitry Nazarov
Designer and founder of the Ippiart design studio

Suggest new incredible ideas of scrap recycling, that will be used unnecessary things in the most unexpected new areas. Create functional things or just objects of art, anything that can bring joy and benefit to you and others.

Dmitry Nazarov is a Russian designer from Moscow. In 2008 he graduated at the Transportation design department of the Stroganov Moscow State Academy of Arts and Industry. From 2008 to present he is a postgraduate student, lecturer, and the responsible officer for the international relations and the organization of design contests of the Transportation design department of Stroganov Academy. In 2010 he founded the Ippiart design studio (together with his wife Reyhaneh Noury, postgraduate student of Stroganov Academy). The main activities of the studio are: architecture, interior design, industrial and transportation design. He participated in international exhibitions e.g. Automania 2011, Ekaterinburg; Sretenka design week 2010, Moscow; InnoTrans 2010, Berlin. In 2010 he won a prize in the international YouRail Design contest, organized by HYVE and Bombardier, and got the opportunity to show his project on the world's largest railway exhibition InnoTrans in Berlin at the Bombardier’s stand.

Birgit Rieder is Director of Gem Creative for the Synthetic and Gemstone Business of D. SWAROVSKI KG / SWAROVSKI GEMS™, has worked for the Swarovski Group for more than fifteen years. After starting her career in product management, she became Manager for Special Marketing Projects like the SWAROVSKI GEMS™ design contests and Director of Gem Creative, the trend and design department of Swarovski’s Synthetic and Gemstone Business. It was in the context of her most recent position that Birgit initiated the SWAROVSKI GEMS™ fine jewelry trends forecasting service, Gem Visions. During the past eight years that Birgit has managed this pioneering initiative, Gem Visions has grown to be a widely acclaimed and highly valued design and marketing tool for the jewelry industry.

Michael Schmidt

After his graduation as Industrial Designer in 1997 until the foundation of the HYVE AG in the year 2000, Michael Schmidt worked as a self-employed product designer and worked on contracts for companies including Porsche, BMW, AVIA and Premiere. In 1992, he passed the trade test as mechanical engineer which forms the base for his expertise in the field of manufacturing processes and construction. Between 1986 and 1989, he received his high-school-graduation in the U.S. and studied for one semester at the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio

Jason Smith

The Scrap Lab contest is a great initiative to showcase how creativity and sustainability can unite, to produce inspired design solutions that capture the imagination and benefit the environment. This competition highlights how consumer and industrial waste can be up-cycled to produce functional items, when discarded materials are considered in a different way. This is an ideal opportunity for creative ideas to be submitted, to educate people regarding the value of waste materials and to demonstrate how they can be used to reduce waste disposal. Designers have needed to take more responsibility for the materials they use for many years and now it is the time to show how.

Jason Smith studied art and design in the UK and graduated in 1999 from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth. His final year of studies was dedicated to the subject of Green Design and sustainability. After several years of working and consulting for design agencies in London, he co-founded Spread Design at the age of 26. He led the successful design agency for 8 years, working for international clients in multi design disciplines. Jason Smith has recently decided to work independently with his new company Jason Smith Design and is also pursuing his passion for sustainable design. He is currently prototyping limited edition pieces that address the need to up-cycle and creatively use the consumer and industry waste we generate in society, in inspiring and sustainable ways.

Auwi Stübbe
Professor for architecture and chairman of the Coburg Design Forum Upper Franconia

Professor Auwi Stübbe is teaching in the fields of architecture and interior architecture at the University of Applied Science Coburg. After a carpentry apprenticeship he graduated in civil engineering – interior architecture. Several activities as a self-employed designer and interior architect led him spent some time in Indonesia and the Philipines where he developed sustainable products like Rattanfurniture. In 1990 he became dean of the department architecture/interior architecture at Coburg. Auwi Stübbe is one of the founding members of the Coburg Design Forum Upper Franconia and since 2006 first chairman. Moreover, he is engaged in the bayern design GmbH and the Innovationcenter Lichtenfels e.V.


Scrap makes you win! By taking part in the contest and submitting your design you can win valuable prizes! The design can be either a first draft or a final prototype.

The members with the three best designs amongst all categories can win the following monetary prizes.

The jury is responsible for the selection of the best overall designs whether draft or prototype. The members of the jury will consider the opinions of the community and the evaluation criteria (Overall impression, Creativity, Elaboration of design, Feasibility and Sustainability).
