Optical Confusion – Freestanding Shelving System
The number of televisions being recycled in Ireland has risen by 70% in the past year due ‘Free-view’ technology. Most televisions don’t even get recycled and end up in landfill or on the side of the road. After seeing a couple of abandoned televisions we questioned how they could be reused. Our solution was to take the bulky plastic frames and create a funky shelving system that would look great in any students bedroom or living room. They are securely bolted together and have a spray painted finish. So simple anybody could do this themselves. (The insides of the TV were brought to a recycle point.)


About our team:We have designed these individual furniture pieces with a concept behind each one using all locally source recycled materials, mainly concentrating on student waste. So we asked ourselves what do we waste? What of this waste is not recycled appropriately? We had a time frame of two weeks and a team of 12 interior design and architect students. In totally we have four creations, each with their own story and concept. We really enjoyed this project and hope you can be inspired from our designs. All of these pieces can be found under the titled Student Recession.
