Need: Anthropophilic mosquitoes transmit a number of arboviruses responsible for malaria, yellow fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, epidemic polyarthritis, and several forms of encephalitis.
Design basis: Mosquitoes are attracted to their blood meals by a combination of heat, human body odor, and moisture.
This mosquito trap uses solar heat during the day to melt candle wax held in a recycled 1 liter bottle. When the evening air temperature drops (and when mosquitoes start feeding) the heat of the wax is given off, causing an upward airflow containing moisture and attractant. The air flow force the mosquitoes attracted to the bottom water cup through a chimney up into a trap made of women's hose and mounted to the top. The attractant is simply foot odor collected in an old sock or sweatband worn during the day and washed into a small cup at the bottom of the trap.
This product can be made anywhere around the world suffering the ravages of malaria using free scrap. It is based up proven technology and scientific research used in an injection molded version being offered in developed countries.
Fabrication of this effective device involves about 10 minutes with a knife and a cook stove (to originally melt the wax). Fabrication in quantity can provide jobs for those in the village and cities while local residents or NGO's are the envisioned customers .
